Leblon is a small but fashionable district located between the sea and the lagoon. It is an exclusive area, which is obviously posh and expensive. All the elements including the shops and the restaurants are designed to fit this high society neighborhood. A large part of this area is residential with much of the trade and basic services being concentrated in the “Ataulfo de Paiva Avenue” and Delfim Moreira Avenue. The exclusivity of this neighborhood makes it well sought after by the locals.


Tourist Attractions

Leblon is the dream neighborhood for most cariocas. If you are looking for some high class shopping or fine dining, Leblon is the place to be. There are 2 malls in the area namely "Shopping Leblon" and "Rio Design Leblon". Leblon beach is quiet and well attended to, thus ensuring that it is always clean, especially the stretch in front of the Marina Hotel. The Dias Ferreira Street is a sort of outdoor shopping mall that has more than thirty fashion stores, wine shops, chocolate shops and jewelry of high standards. Fine dining restaurants like the Celeiro and Sushi Leblon will certainly satisfy even the most discerning of palates.

Leblon’s Culinary Hotspots

The best restaurants are concentrated on Dias Ferreira Street. Other than the famous Celeiro and Sushi Leblon, several other restaurants specialize in different cuisines so finding food of your choice isn’t a problem. Zuka is famous for contemporary cuisine, Sawasdee serves delicious Thai food, while Manekineko is a trendy Japanese restaurant. All these restaurants are usually packed with tourists.

 Giuseppe Grill is another popular eating place in Leblon. With its modern and luxurious decor and an extensive menu of excellent meat, it is no wonder is always packed with locals and tourists. Antiquarius, located in the district at Rua Aristides Espinola, is renowned for their “Cod Oil” among other specialties of Portuguese cuisine.

For those looking for a cheaper option there are various places to choose from. Frontera, which is a chain of restaurants, is known for its moderate pricing and good food. These buffet style restaurants offer all you can eat food for fixed prices, which is perfect tourists who could do with a sumptuous meal after a grueling day of sightseeing. Another buffet option is the traditional restaurant, Fellini, located at Avenida General Urquisa. This restaurant is a local favorite which means that it guarantees good food.

The Bracarense bar is stocked with beer and serves some of the best traditional snacks which includes cassava dumpling with shrimp. Don’t forget to try catupiry, a kind of cream cheese, which is incidentally of the most popular dishes. They also have an array of excellent oven pastries stuffed with shrimp, chicken or beef and balls of cheese with oregano.


Accommodation in Leblon

Since this neighborhood is quite posh and exclusive, it does not have much to offer in terms of housing for travelers. The two largest hotels in the neighborhood are the Marina All Suites and Marina Palace Hotel, both located in Leblon and belonging to the same network. The Marina All Suites as the name suggests is more cozy and intimate while the Marina Palace is grander and houses the famous "Bar da Praia". The neighborhood offers some other options like the Promenade located near the beach and the Leblon Inn located on the trendy "Rua Dias Ferreira". The Lemon Spirit Hostel attracts young travelers. 

Practical Tips From a Carioca

There is no dearth of nightclubs and dancehalls in Leblon. Melt, attracts the young and trendy crowd among the locals and is famous for its imported beer and cocktails. It is located on the corner of Rita Ludolf and General San Martin. Veloso bar is located nearby and is frequented by a young and lively crowd. Other options include Jobi, Bracarense and the new tapas bar Venga. The pizzeria, Guanabara and BB Snacks are among the numerous establishments on Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva that provide entertainment for midnight revelers wanting a small break before hitting the nightclubs again.
